Worn Key or Worn Lock? How to Tell Which One Is Really Behind Your Sticking Door

A door that has started sticking, jamming, or demanding a jiggle before it opens sends most people straight to one of two wrong conclusions: either the lock is failing and needs replacing, or the key is fine and it must be everything else. The truth is that keys and locks wear together, and the fault usually sits with one of them specifically. Replacing the wrong component is a common and expensive mistake, because a new lock paired with a worn key will still stick, and a fresh key in a ruined lock will fail just as fast. Working out which side is really to blame is a short diagnostic process, and it saves both money and repeated frustration.

Why Keys and Locks Wear as a Pair

Every time a key enters a lock, its cut edges rub against the internal pins. Over thousands of uses, the key's precise peaks and valleys round off slightly, and the pins inside the cylinder wear against the key in return. Because they wear into each other, a tired key and a tired lock can limp along together for a while, each compensating for the other. The problems appear when one side degrades faster than the other, or when a copy of a copy introduces small errors that the worn lock can no longer tolerate.



Brass keys, being relatively soft, tend to wear faster than the hardened components inside a good cylinder, which is why the key is often the first thing to go. But a cheap or exposed lock full of grit and moisture can outpace the key, degrading from the inside while the key still looks fine. Knowing which is ageing faster in your particular door is the whole diagnostic puzzle.

The Simple Swap Test

The single most useful diagnostic is also the easiest. If you have more than one key for the door, try each one.

  • If a spare key that is used less often works smoothly while your everyday key sticks, the everyday key is worn, not the lock.
  • If every key you own sticks equally, suspicion shifts firmly toward the lock.
  • If a freshly cut key from the original also struggles, the lock is almost certainly the culprit.

This test alone resolves a large share of sticking-door mysteries before anyone spends a penny on hardware. It works because a worn lock treats all keys badly, while a worn key is uniquely bad in a way its siblings are not. The moment a different key behaves differently, the key that misbehaves is your answer.

Reading the Key Itself

A worn key often shows its age if you look closely. Hold it beside a rarely used spare and compare the cutting edges. A worn key's peaks look rounded and shiny where a fresher key's are crisp and defined. Keys that have been copied repeatedly, each copy taken from the previous copy rather than the original, drift further from the correct cut with every generation, and eventually the lock rejects them.



There is a useful rule of thumb here: never cut a new key from a copy. Each generation loses a little accuracy, so a copy of a copy of a copy can be meaningfully wrong even though it looks identical to the eye. If the working key is visibly smoothed down, or is a third or fourth generation duplicate, the key is likely your problem, and cutting a fresh one from the original code or a first-generation key is the fix. This is often the cheapest repair of all, which is exactly why it is worth ruling in before anything drastic.

Reading the Lock's Behaviour

The lock tells its own story through how it fails. A worn or contaminated cylinder tends to stick in the same place every time, regardless of which key is used, and often feels gritty on insertion. Sticking that changes with the weather, easing in dry conditions and worsening in cold or damp, points less at the cylinder and more at door alignment or seized mechanism parts. A key that turns but the bolt does not throw properly moves the diagnosis away from the cylinder entirely and toward the gearbox or the door's fit in the frame.



Listen and feel as much as look. A cylinder full of worn pins may feel spongy or vague, lacking the crisp click of a healthy lock. One contaminated with grit or old, gummed-up oil feels rough on insertion and may improve briefly after cleaning before deteriorating again. These sensations, consistent across every key, are the signature of a lock at the end of its service rather than a key that simply needs recutting.

Separating Lock Faults From Door Faults

This is the trap that catches even careful diagnosers. A door can stick for reasons that have nothing to do with either the key or the cylinder. A door that has dropped on its hinges, a frame that has shifted, or seals that have hardened all create resistance that feels exactly like a lock problem. The tell is whether the key turns freely when the door is open and only resists when the door is shut. If so, the lock is innocent and the alignment is the real issue.



This single test, operating the lock with the door open versus closed, separates a genuine lock fault from a door fault more reliably than any other. A lock that works perfectly in the open air and only fights you when the door is in its frame is not worn at all; it is being asked to force misaligned bolts into misplaced keeps. Running through these checks in order, spare-key swap, visual key comparison, lock behaviour, then door alignment, walks you straight to the actual cause rather than the assumed one.

Why Getting the Diagnosis Right Pays Off

The cost gap between the possible fixes is large. Cutting a fresh key from the original code is inexpensive. Replacing a cylinder is a moderate job. Replacing a full multipoint mechanism or rehanging a dropped door is a bigger one again. Guessing wrong means paying for the expensive fix and still having the problem, because the true fault was never touched.



There is a hidden cost too: forcing a sticking door while you guess accelerates whatever is actually wrong. A worn key jammed harder each morning eventually snaps in the lock; a misaligned door forced repeatedly wears its mechanism out early. A few minutes of honest diagnosis is the cheapest, and most satisfying, part of the whole repair, and it usually points to a smaller fix than the worst-case fear that prompted the worry.

The sticking door that finally gives out at the worst moment almost always spent weeks dropping hints about whether the key or the lock was to blame.
