Before any replacement happens, a locksmith takes a set of precise measurements, and understanding what they are measuring reveals a great deal about how your door is actually protected.

Why the Cylinder Sits at the Heart of Door Security

Everything the handle and multipoint mechanism do is triggered by the cylinder. It is the part that reads the key and releases the lock, which makes it both the control point and the most exposed target on the door. Because it protrudes from the door face, it is physically reachable in a way the internal mechanism is not. This exposure is precisely why sizing it correctly is not a detail but the whole point.



It is worth appreciating just how much rests on this one small component. A door can have flawless multipoint hardware, sound hinges, and a solid frame, yet if its cylinder is the wrong size or grade, all of that engineering can be bypassed in seconds at the one exposed point. The cylinder is where good door security is most often won or lost.

The Measurement That Matters Most: The Two Halves

A euro cylinder is measured from its centre, where the fixing screw passes through, outward in two directions. One measurement runs to the external face of the door, and the other to the internal face. This gives a figure such as 40/50 or 35/45, and the order matters enormously.



The external measurement is the vulnerable one. If it is too large, the cylinder juts past the escutcheon and handle, giving something to grip and lever. Getting the external side as close to flush as possible, ideally protruding no more than a couple of millimetres, is the single most effective anti-attack step. The internal side has more tolerance because it faces safely indoors, though an excessively long internal section can look untidy and occasionally foul the handle mechanism.

How the Measurement Is Actually Taken

The process is methodical rather than guesswork:

  • The fixing screw at the bottom of the door edge is removed so the cylinder can be referenced or withdrawn.
  • The distance from the central screw hole to the outer door face is measured.
  • The distance from the central screw hole to the inner door face is measured.
  • The two figures are recorded separately, external first, and never simply added and halved.

That last point is where many botched replacements go wrong. A door that needs a 40/50 cylinder is not the same as one needing a 45/45, even though both total 90mm. Splitting the difference can push the vulnerable external side outward and undo the entire benefit of the new lock. A careful measurement also accounts for handle backplates and escutcheons, since these sit proud of the door and change how far a cylinder can safely protrude before it becomes grippable.

Why a Few Millimetres Changes Everything

Lock snapping is an attack that targets the exposed external section of a cylinder. Anything protruding gives leverage, and once the outer section is snapped away, the mechanism can be manipulated open in seconds. This is why the external measurement is treated with such care. A flush-fitted, correctly sized cylinder gives an attacker almost nothing to grip. An over-long one, even by five millimetres, reintroduces the exact weakness the upgrade was meant to remove.



This is also where cylinder quality enters the picture. A correctly measured anti-snap cylinder combines a sacrificial break line with flush sizing, so that even a determined snapping attempt shears off the outer section harmlessly while the working part of the lock stays intact inside the door. Length and grade work together: the right length denies leverage, and the right grade ensures that any force applied fails safely rather than opening the door. Neither alone is enough, which is why a good locksmith considers both in the same breath.

What Else Gets Checked Alongside Length

Length is the headline, but a proper measurement includes the cylinder type and orientation too. A locksmith will note whether the door needs a key-both-sides cylinder, a thumbturn on the inside for quick egress, or a specific keyway to match other locks in the property. The overall door thickness, the position of the handle screws, and the condition of the surrounding hardware all feed into choosing a cylinder that sits right and performs as intended.



There is also the matter of matching the cylinder to how the household uses the door. A door that is a designated fire escape benefits from an internal thumbturn so no one hunts for a key in an emergency, while a door with glazing nearby may call for a key-both-sides cylinder so it cannot be reached and turned from outside. Getting all of this correct is quiet, unglamorous work, and it is exactly the work that decides whether a door genuinely resists a common attack or merely looks like it does.

Small Numbers, Large Consequences

It is a strange truth of door security that the difference between a resilient front door and an easy target can be five millimetres of protruding metal.
