Home lock security: questions to check before an upgrade
A practical checklist for replacement locks, door hardware and the requirements stated in your own insurance policy.
Call to confirm availability and an arrival estimate. Parts and labour are quoted before work starts.
Read the requirement for your property
Insurance requirements differ between policies and doors. Check the current policy wording or ask the insurer which specification it requires. Do not assume a marketing label or a particular price makes a lock acceptable. Mark can discuss hardware options, but cannot certify your insurance cover.
Assess the whole door
The cylinder, handles, door alignment and surrounding hardware work together. A replacement cylinder cannot correct every door or frame problem. Explain whether the concern is missing keys, a sticking lock, damage or an intended security upgrade so the inspection can address the right issue.
Letterboxes and other openings
If you are concerned about a door opening or an existing access risk, ask for a professional assessment of suitable protective hardware. Products need to suit the door and everyday use. Do not obstruct necessary access or ventilation, and avoid improvised changes that could damage the door.
Specify and document the work
Ask for the exact product, fitted price, supplied keys and relevant documentation. Keep the receipt and any manufacturer information. Where policy acceptance matters, confirm it with your insurer before booking. No claim that a property is burglar-proof or insurance-approved should be inferred from a lock installation alone.
Your next step
For an urgent lockout or an unsecured door, call Mark. For a planned repair, send your postcode, the symptoms and a photograph on WhatsApp. Do not include images of keys or access codes.
